1955

Catalogue range: Philatelic Hub PK73–PK81, including PK73a

The 1955 Pakistan stamp programme focused strongly on industrial development, international cooperation and political reorganisation. The eighth anniversary of independence was commemorated with stamps depicting the Karnaphuli Paper Mill, a textile mill, a jute mill and the Sui Gas Plant. These subjects highlighted the industrial resources and economic ambitions of both East and West Pakistan. A second issue marked the tenth anniversary of the United Nations, using designs featuring Jahangir’s Mausoleum and the Sui Gas Plant to connect Pakistan’s national heritage and development with international cooperation. Later in the year, a three-stamp series commemorated the unification of the provinces and princely states of the western wing into the administrative unit known as West Pakistan—the “One Unit” scheme, which formally came into effect in October 1955. The year is also philatelically notable for Pakistan’s early use of multicolour printing and recognised stamp varieties. Philatelic Hub catalogues the principal individual issues from PK73 to PK81, including the PK73a variety, while complete sets are separately listed. This category documents Pakistan’s mid-1950s emphasis on industry, unity and participation in world institutions.
