PK20 to PK43
Pakistan’s 1948 stamp programme introduced the country’s first original commemorative and definitive postage stamps. The year began philatelically with the First Anniversary of Independence set, issued on 9 July 1948. Its four designs feature the Constituent Assembly Building in Karachi, Karachi Airport, Lahore Fort and the crescent-and-stars emblem. On 14 August, Pakistan released its first comprehensive definitive series, depicting national symbols, institutions and landmarks from both wings of the country. Subjects include the Scales of Justice, crescent and star, Lloyd Barrage—now Sukkur Barrage—Karachi Airport, Karachi Port Trust Building, Salimullah Muslim Hall in Dacca and the historic Khyber Pass. Together, these stamps presented a visual introduction to Pakistan’s geography, infrastructure and national identity. They were denominated in pies, annas and rupees and served everyday postal needs for several years. The first-anniversary issue also produced Pakistan’s first special pictorial first-day cancellation.
