The 1947 Pakistan stamp issues mark the beginning of the country’s independent postal history. Following the establishment of Pakistan on 14 August 1947, existing British Indian King George VI definitive stamps were overprinted with the word “PAKISTAN” for use in the new state. These provisional stamps provided an immediate and practical solution while original Pakistani designs were being prepared. The series includes nineteen principal denominations, catalogued by Philatelic Hub as PK01 to PK19, covering the postal rates required for letters, registration, parcels and other services. Their designs retain the portrait of King George VI and the visual character of British Indian postage, while the Pakistan overprint transforms them into important symbols of political change. Pakistan also became a member of the Universal Postal Union in November 1947, establishing its place within the international postal system. For collectors, these stamps are especially interesting because of different overprint settings, shades, perforations and postal cancellations. The 1947 issues represent Pakistan’s first official postage stamps and form the essential starting point of every specialised Pakistan collection.
