Pakistan’s 1954 issues combined an extensive Independence Anniversary series with a celebrated mountaineering achievement. The seven-stamp set for the seventh anniversary of independence portrayed the country’s landscapes, monuments, agriculture and economic resources. Designs include the Kaghan Valley, the Gilgit and Kashmir mountain region, Badshahi Mosque, Jahangir’s Mausoleum, tea plantations, cotton fields, and the jute fields and rivers of East Pakistan. Together, these images presented Pakistan as a country of dramatic geography, historic architecture and productive agricultural regions. The year’s final commemorative honoured the conquest of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, by the Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio. Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli reached the summit on 31 July 1954, and Pakistan’s stamp recognised an event of international mountaineering importance.
